God’s conversation with Samuel in the temple.

Gail Hein | Reading: 1 Samuel 3:1-18

Reading verse ten, the words of “Here I Am Lord” come to mind as Samuel’s response in song.

My conversations with God are quiet and private, but I know I have a dedicated listener and need only wait silently or watch carefully for answers.

I never intended to retire; I loved my job. However, administrative changes made me rethink. My husband reported, “The person I see in the morning is not the person I greet at the end of the day.” Hesitantly, I broached the topic of retirement. We discussed the decreased income, but mostly, what would we do with our time? Two retirees living in the same household and happily surviving?

Later, driving home after a grueling day, I said, “God, are you trying to tell me something?” The answer came: “Why won’t you trust me?”

After discussions with Al and that gentle reprimand from God, I submitted my retirement paperwork. It just felt “right.” The following morning, I interacted with colleagues, secure in the knowledge that my decision was God-directed and right.

“It is I, Lord, I have heard you calling in the night.”
