POSITION SUMMARY
The Presbyterian Church in Morristown seeks an Interim Director of Children’s Music (IDCM) to create and nurture a joyful, inclusive, and spiritually rich music ministry that welcomes and uplifts children and youth. Building on a rich tradition of musical excellence, our next IDCM will educate and inspire, helping us to tell our faith stories and connect us to God and one another through the gift of music.

Senior Pastor
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In cooperation with the staff, Children, Youth, and Family Ministries Committee (CYF), Worship and Music Committee, and Interim Director of Adult Music, help plan, develop, and implement the comprehensive music ministry of the church.
- Provide direction for all children’s musical ensembles, including:
- PCM: Leading weekly rehearsals during Midweek program (Wednesday afternoons); opening worship during Sunday School; weekly rehearsal for grades 2 – 5 during the Sunday 10:00 am worship service; and regular participation in Sunday and special services, which may include Christmas Eve, Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday, and Vacation Bible School.
- PCNS (Presbyterian Church Nursery School): Leading weekly music class and Joy and Music (JAM), an afterschool music enrichment.
- Establish consistent communications with parents.
- Support the administrative needs of the music ministry, which include proposing an annual budget, providing bulletin information and articles, purchasing music, and ensuring copyright licensing.
- Help plan and attend monthly CYF Committee meetings.
- Collaborate with Interim Director of Adult Music.
- Provide strategic recommendations for music program development with a focus on community engagement and membership growth.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal IDCM will have strong skills in children’s music education, conducting, and piano playing, as well as expertise in sacred choral and congregational music for all ages, ranging from traditional to contemporary.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE INCLUDE:
- Broad liturgical knowledge that lends itself to the age-appropriate selection of music to enhance worship;
- Ability to complete short- and long-range planning for multiple groups;
- Experience with choral direction and development;
- Demonstrate an ability to work well with diverse groups in the church;
- Invite, welcome, and nurture new members to the music ministry.
- The ideal candidate will also have a mature faith and familiarity with the Reformed Tradition.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Our preferred candidate would have a Bachelor’s Degree or above and/or equivalent performance certificate, along with professional experience in children’s music education and church liturgy.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS AT PCM:
The musical resources of the church include:
- The sanctuary organ, which is a seventy-eight rank, three-manual instrument built by the Austin Organ Company;
- A smaller Austin unit organ located in the Chapel;
- A Klop Continuo Organ;
- Three grand pianos; two upright pianos;
- A six-octave handbell set; and a five-octave chime set.
CONTRACT PERIOD:
- August 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026
- Part-time exempt: 15-20 hours/week, including Wednesdays (morning/afternoon) and Sundays (morning)
