A Legacy of Compassion and Care

The Story of Jan’s Closet

In the mid-1990s, The Presbyterian Church of Morristown opened its doors to a small but impactful ministry that would come to mean a great deal to the local community. What began as a simple clothing bank quickly evolved into a vital source of dignity and compassion for individuals and families in need.

At the heart of this effort was Jan Harris. When Pastor Emeritus, Tom Sheffield, asked her to take on the role of coordinator, Jan brought more than just organization—she brought heart, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to service. Every Tuesday morning, Jan and a growing team of volunteers welcomed guests with kindness, offering clean, quality clothing to anyone who needed it. The initiative was generously supported by members of the congregation, the Presbyterian Women, and even extended to include local corporate partners such as AT&T, who offered their time and energy in support of the mission.

Jan’s dedication went beyond managing donations and logistics. She built relationships with local retailers who donated new clothing and essentials, ensuring that each guest was treated with respect and care. She knew her clients personally—their sizes, their stories, and their struggles—and worked to restore a sense of normalcy and dignity in their lives.

When the Parish House underwent renovation in 2014, the clothing bank temporarily closed. But its impact was never forgotten. Before the Parish House reopened, a new name was proposed for the ministry—Jan’s Closet—as a tribute to Jan Harris’s years of faithful service. Though Jan was battling illness at the time, she lived to see the legacy honored. In October 2016, her children and grandchildren traveled from across the country to witness the dedication of Jan’s Closet.

Jan’s Closet continues to serve the Morristown community today as a testament to the power of compassion, volunteerism, and one woman’s remarkable commitment to caring for her neighbors.
